The 4th January of each year is celebrated the World Braille Day. The whole world, like Benin, celebrates this day. The opportunity for all to pay tribute to the thousands of visually impaired people around the world.

This World Day celebrated this Friday is an opportunity to highlight the disability suffered by the blind and visually impaired, but also to recall the existence of Braille, a tactile alphabet. Developed almost 200 years ago, this tactile 6 points writing system benefits from advances in technology. Braille is an embossed writing that is read with fingers through a system that allows 64 combinations, including alphabet, accents, punctuation and even musical characters.
It also enables thousands of blind and visually-impaired students from around the world, particularly in Africa, to continue their education in traditional fields.
Braille is a writing invented by the French Louis Braille in 1825. Moreover, the choice of 4th January to celebrate this day is due to the fact of the date of birth of Louis Braille who was, himself, blind since childhood after an accident.
Braille is a real literacy issue for blind people in Africa, especially in Benin. In addition to learners attending conventional schools or literacy classes, there are blind people who are not on the margins, because of Braille, adapted to their condition allows them to read and write.
Braille above all allows blind people to be open to the world, communicate and inform themselves too.
