Training of Twenty Women On Legal Rights , Gender Perspective

GAMBIA FEDERATION OF DISABLED CONDUCTED THREE DAYS TRAINING FOR 20 WOMEN WITH DISABILITIES

Gambia Federation Of Disabled (GFD) Organised three days awareness raising for twenty women with disabilities. These twenty women were members from different Disabled Peoples Organisations across the Gambia. Out of fifteen (DPOS) including four women from (GFD) Board.
The intensive awareness raising commenced on Friday the 27 to Sunday 29 December, 2019 at the headquarters of the Federation at GOVI Hall. The three days awareness raising session focused on Genda perspective, Legal entitlements and Rights of Persons With Disabilities. The said three days awareness raising was funded by the United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) The three days training organised by the federation is in line with one of the core Human Rights Treaties couched in Article 6 of UNCRPD which talks about Women with disabilities, the preamble of UNCRPD on; the Convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women and Article 8 of the said Convention which states awareness raising.

At these three days workshop, The Rights of Persons With Disabilities was presided over by Magistrate Muhammed Krubally, as Chairman of the Federation. In his deliberation, he informed Women their rights at the pre, during and post marriages. He also informed Women With Disabilities their absolute rights couched in the Women’s Act 2010 and 2016 as amended, their rights in the UNCRPD and the Constitution of The Gambia. He urged women to be aware and consider fighting for their rights whenever encroached upon and in addition told them not to be lazy or shy from following up their rights.
The said twenty women who attended the three days workshop expressed their satisfaction and happiness of being informed of their rights which according to them were not known to them before. They promised that, they would no longer allow to be victims of circumstances whenever their rights are encroached upon.

Regarding to the topic of GENDER AND LEGAL ENTITLEMENTS, was deliberated by Barrister Bafour Jeng. In her deliberation informed Women With Disabilities their inherent dignity, inalienable rights and fundamental freedom. Their rights to health, education right to employment and right to life were also explained to them and urged them not to take same lightly. Women are also informed of caution in terms of physical violence as well as psychological violence. She urged women at this forum to be very well conscious of same.
At the end of the three days workshop, Women With Disabilities expressed satisfaction that they now know their rights and stated that, they will confidently exercise their rights whenever same is encroached upon by anyone, government or authority.
This was the end of the three days sensitisation workshop organised and benefitted by women with disabilities.
