GAMBIA’S DRAFT DISABILITY BILL IS FINALLY PRESENTED IN THE CABINET

GAMBIA’S DRAFT DISABILITY BILL IS FINALLY PRESENTED IN THE CABINET Following much pressure and criticisms over long delayed Disability Bill of Persons With Disabilities in The Gambia which really lacked much attention and interest perhaps by Gambia Government,there is now a positive move taken toward such bill now. A lots of consultations, review and amendments were effected in the bill just to make it a win-win situation or legislation both for Persons With Disabilities and the Gambia Government and other stakeholders.

In spite of these attitude toward the bill, the Gambia Federation of the Disabled with its line ministries such as Ministry for Women, Chioldrn and Social Welfare, Department Of Social Welfare and Ministry continued to push the bill to an advanced stage. Pursuant to these efforts and interests, there was no choice left for the Ministry of Justice but to now officially and finally present the Bill to the Cabinet. The bill is now called called persons With Disabilities Bil 2020.
According to the Honourable Minister of Justice, Aboubacarr Tambadou, Persons With Disabilities Bill 2020 will be discussed before the cabinet ministers and thereafter will be gazzetted. After being gazzetted, it will finally be presented to the National Assembly for legislative proceedings and when adopted by the National Assembly Members, it will now become a law.Now,
The Persons With Disabilities Bill 2020 will only be given a number and a date for discussion.
Today, Gambia Federation of the Disabled is delighted that they are making a head way to see the bill through.
