Access to Services for People with Disabilities in 7 West African Countries (Summary)

DECISIPH/ Handicap International, 2011

The main objective of this study, which has been conducted as part of the DECISIPH project, was to compare access to various services for people with disabilities against that for people without disabilities. For this purpose, in 2010, observation was carried out in the six countries involved in the first phase of the project (Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Togo, Sierra Leone), and in Benin. However, these studies were not designed for assessing disability prevalence rates in the study areas, let alone at the country level. They were designed to collect and share up-to-date reference data on disability in the study areas, support the advocacy work of local DPOs for the rights of persons with disabilities, and define actions for strengthening Handicap International’s activities.

This paper summarises the seven studies conducted. It does not compare the results of the different countries. The areas in which the studies were carried out are very different in terms of population and environment (see Table 1) and so a comparative statistical analysis is not possible. Our aim here is to present all the results for all the countries and all the services in a single document in order to provide a concise and accessible account of the studies conducted.
