Niger / International Albinism Awareness Day: All together for the protection and well-being of people with albinism

Following to the celebration of June 13, consecrated international day of awareness of albinism, the National Association of People with Albinism in Niger (ANAN) with the support of the Raoul Follereau Foundation delivers this message.

Albinism is a genetic condition inherited from both parents, which occurs around the world, regardless of ethnicity or gender. In sub-Saharan Africa, people with albinism are among the most marginalized and vulnerable populations because they are at risk of skin cancer and stigma.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in some countries the majority of people with albinism die from skin cancer and other skin diseases. People with albinism are particularly sensitive to light and the effects of ultraviolet rays and therefore have a higher risk of burns when exposed to the sun. When wounds are left untreated, they turn into cancer. So dear people with albinism and dear parents, be careful, be vigilant, avoid exposing yourself and your children with albinism to the sun. Because sun exposure is dangerous for their skin and eyes. So use the means of protection at your disposal, such as the use of sunscreens, hats, long-sleeved clothing and sunglasses.

In order to prevent skin diseases including cancer which can lead to the death of those who are affected: see a health center in the event of a sore or pimple on your skin. Let’s all work together for the well-being of people with albinism in Niger
