DECISIPH/Handicap International, 2009
This summary report is a synthesis of a survey conducted by Mr AGBOVI Komlan Kwassi, a sociologist and independent consultant, and is part of the regional DECISIPH project, (Rights, equality, citizenship, solidarity and inclusion of people with disabilities) across six countries in West Africa: Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo. Benin, although not initially taking part in the DECISIPH project, was also included in the study.
The objective of the summary report is to present the main conclusions and strong ideas of the survey, in order to give to partners – and especially to DPOs – a tool that gives a general picture of the situation. This tool will give them a better knowledge and understanding of the perceptions and negative representations of society towards PWDs.
A better understanding of sociological barriers to the inclusion of PWDs and a concrete illustration of discriminatory and exclusion situations they live daily in the sub-region countries will give some keys to fight against these discriminations efficiently.
