"Inclusives Cities": DECISIPH at Africities-Dakar, December 4-8, 2012

[fr]DECISIPH/ Handicap International participe au sommet Africités et lancera la réflexion sur les politiques locales de développement à travers une session spéciale sur les villes inclusives.[en]DECISIPH/ Handicap International will participate to the Summit Africities and launch the reflection on local development policies through a special session on Inclusive Cities.

The 6th edition of the Africities Summit is scheduled to take place at the King Fahd Palace Hotel Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, from 04 to 08 December 2012. Its theme will be "Building Africa from its Territories: What challenges for the local governments ?”
The participants represent all the protagonists of the African local life and their partners from other regions of the world:ministers in charge for the local governments and ministers in charge of sustainable development and of employment;local authorities and elected officials;central and local administrations representatives;civil society organizations, professional associations and trade unions;economic operators of the public and private sectors, and of the social economy;traditional and moral authorities;researchers and academics;international cooperation agencies.

This summit opens the day after the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on the 3rd of December. This year’s theme was, “Removing barriers to create an inclusive and accessible society for all”. This day is followed shortly by the International Human Rights Day on the 10th of December with the theme of “My Voice Counts: Rights and Inclusion in public life”. Thanks to this alignment of events, Africities is a beautiful opportunity to promote the rights of people with disabilities, and human rights more globally. (See Press Release)

DECISIPH/Handicap International will contribute to this event on several ways.
- Participation of DECISIPH and its partners: a strong delegation will be present during the summit, with Disabled People’s Organisations representatives and institutional partners (national and local governments)
- Accessibility of the summit: Handicap International supports the organizers to make the summit more accessible to persons with disability. For instance, plenary sessions (opening and closing) will be translated to deaf participants.
- Organization of a special session on Inclusive Cities.

The session "Inclusive Cities: Improving Involvement
of people marginalised and discriminated against" will take place on December 6th, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 AM at the King Fahd Palace Hotel.
This “Inclusive Cities” session will share the experiences of local authorities, civil society organizations and development partners, in their efforts to ensure greater inclusion of marginalized populations in local development policies. Cases of good practice from West Africa and Brazil will be discussed in order to incite reflection, discussion and formulation of recommendations for the post-2015 development agenda aiming at local and global development for all.
